The Best of Benny Hill is a delightful compilation that encapsulates the essence of one of Britain's most beloved comedic figures. Released theatrically in 1974, this film presents a curated selection of sketches from the early Thames Television years, from 1969 to 1973, showcasing his unique blend of slapstick, innuendo, and absurdity. From the outset, viewers are treated to Hill's signature brand of humour, characterised by his ability to make the mundane hilariously absurd. The compilation features classic sketches that highlight Hill’s physical comedy and mastery of timing, including the chaotic "Tuppertime," a chat show spoof that brilliantly satirised the genre with outrageous guests and unexpected turns. The interplay between Hill and his regular cast, including the ever-reliable Henry McGee…

A compilation of one of our greatest comedic exports, the still hilarious Benny Hill. This was made in 1974, and I am sure I must have seen it before, as our house was a Hill loving house, but as I am not sure I am classing this as a first watch.
Benny Hill's comedy was often rather wide of PC, but the girls he worked with adored him and any sexism was presented in a seaside postcard way, without causing offence. Sure, all the girls were large-bosomed but that is true of almost every comedy of the period.
Here you have wordy songs, bits of mime, funny sketches and stuff that is simply in existence to make you laugh.
Laughs from a much more innocent age.

I grew up on The Benny Hill Show. Not the original run of one hour episodes but the half-hour one made for International audiences in the 80’s, which took the best bits of the long format shows. (I have since seen the long format shows and unfortunately they were half as fun). Hill had a wide breadth of talents, and his work in the show could be broadly categorized into the following: pantomine; sketches - some, a few seconds long; songs; and bizarre recitations or monologues (not stand-up). The Best of Benny Hill was a theatrically released compilation of best moments, and all facets of Hill’s work are covered, although with an emphasis on my favourite stuff. I particularly am…

Had this sitting on my shelf for years. Pretty sure I grabbed it from my grandpa’s old collection.
I’m sorry Grandpa, but I just don’t think it’s that funny! I guess I’m just too young and too... not-British?
Please don’t haunt me if I give this to Goodwill...
